Melbourne Day at the State Library of Victoria

John Batman's 1835 journal chronicles his first encounters with Aboriginal people in the area that was to become Melbourne; in January 1838, John Pascoe Fawkner hand wrote Melbourne's first newspaper, the Melbourne Advertiser; in July 1841, artist Samuel Jackson sketched in ink a panorama of the fledgling city from the first Scots' Church, and outlaw Ned Kelly was hanged at the old Melbourne Gaol in 1880.

The State Library of Victoria celebrates Melbourne Day from 12pm to 2pm on 30 August with a series of free activities for children drawing inspiration from these iconic people and events that shaped Melbourne.

Melbourne Writers Festival

This year's festival is based in the heart of Melbourne at Federation Square, in the BMW Edge, the two cinemas in the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and other venues in the Square.

The festival has outdoor events; free events: live streaming from the Edinburgh Festival: children's activities: the festival club: walks: dinners: Big Ideas at the RMIT Capitol Theatre and of course our two keynote addresses at the Melbourne Town Hall. Plus our popular professional development program with masterclasses and workshops at the City Museum, State Library of Victoria and the Immigration Museum is back with an extended program.
