Melbourne Day at the State Library of Victoria John Batman's 1835 journal chronicles his first encounters with Aboriginal people in the area that was to become Melbourne; in January 1838, John Pascoe Fawkner hand wrote Melbourne's first newspaper, the Melbourne Advertiser; in July 1841, artist Samuel Jackson sketched in ink a panorama of the fledgling city from the first Scots' Church, and outlaw Ned Kelly was hanged at the old Melbourne Gaol in 1880.
